One of the most relevant monuments in Roman history, the Circus Maximus can for the first time be seen through all its historic phases thanks to a ground-breaking project using interactive display technologies that have never before been used in such an extended outdoor area.

The headsets available give a virtual rendering of the Circus Maximus by overlapping images of the past to the present-day reality to reconstruct its initial magnificence: in particular, the Arch of Titus will appear in its original majestic height.
The CIRCO MAXIMO EXPERIENCE, through continuous flashbacks to the past thanks to reconstructions in augmented and virtual reality, will enable you to see the life of the age-old valley unfold before your eyes, stroll through the Roman shops and watch a chariot race among shouts of encouragement and overturned chariots.

The 40-minute walking itinerary is available in eight languages (Italian, English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese and Japanese).

The eight stops are the following: the valley floor of the Circus in the archaic period, the Circus from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD, the Circus in the imperial period, the seating tiers (cavea), the Arch of Titus, the shops (tabernae), the Circus in the Middle Ages and in modern times and lastly, “A Day at the Circus”. In the same area dominated today by the imposing Palazzo Colonna, several small palaces originally stood, erected at the behest of the noble and ancient Roman family, descendants of the Counts of Tuscolo. Most of the ancient vestiges, whose earliest historical memory dates back to the 13th century, were incorporated into a single and ambitious architectural complex, started in the mid-17th century and completed during the 18th century, when the two new facades along Piazza dei SS. Apostoli and Via della Pilotta were added.

The family's prestigious art collection, counted among the most important Roman collections formed after the Renaissance, is still housed in the palace's most famous wing, the celebrated Galleria Colonna, an extraordinary example of Baroque architecture, built and decorated in the mid- 17th century by Cardinal Girolamo I Colonna and inaugurated in 1703.

The Princess Isabelle’s Apartment, named after the grandmother of the current Princes, is decorated with frescoes by Pinturicchio, Cavalier Tempesta and Gaspard Dughet. It houses an equally remarkable picture gallery that includes masterpieces, including Sofonisba Anguissola's youthful self-portrait dated 1558, as well as paintings by renowned Flemish painters such as Maaerten de Vos and Jan Brueghel the Elder, and the world's most prestigious collection of Vanvitelli's Views of Rome, Venice, Naples.

LEGACY, conceived to celebrate the photographer (Berlin, 1920 - Los Angeles, 2004) and postponed due to the pandemic. A journey through his adventurous life through more than 200 shots, some of which have never been seen before, magazines and documents, to take a new look at the work of a 20th century protagonist who used to describe himself as follows: "My job as a portrait photographer is to seduce, amuse and entertain".

Foro of Caesar: Foro di Traiano next to Trajan’s Column

The tickets can be booked on rompass.vivaticket.it

Stones Can Talk and They’ve Got a Lot to Tell Us. The marble blocks still visible in the Forum of Augustus and the Forum of Caesar are the starting point for a fascinating tour in discovery of magnificent archaeological sites and a temple that was at the heart of events in Ancient Rome. A tour created by Piero Angela and Paco Lanciano. Visitors will have the chance to see two exciting portrayals of life in Ancient Rome, reconstructed within the Imperial Fora using light, images, film and animation. The two reconstructions will be accompanied by a wealth of historic and scientific information, music and a tale by Piero Angela.

FORUM OF AUGUSTUS

Visitors will stand on a flight of Roman stairs to watch a multimedia show portraying the history of the Forum and temple dedicated to Mars Ultor, commissioned by Augustus in memory of Julius Caesar. It was a temple that stood nine floors high and towered over the Forum of Augustus; access was via the halls of the courthouse. The tale also touches on the figure of Augustus, whose giant statue, a good 12 metres tall, dominated the area next to the temple.

FORUM OF CAESAR

In this part of the tour, visitors walk within the Forum itself and among the marble that remains of this enormous piazza, which at the time was surrounded by majestic colonnades and overshadowed by the imposing temple of Venus Genetrix. The tour explores the role of the Forum in the lives of the Roman people and the figure of Julius Caesar, an intelligent and ambitious man, idolised by some but hated and feared by others.

PALAZZO MERULANA

Via Merulana, 121

Didactic tour or Audioguide: 4€ + admission
10% discount at the bistrot, 10% discount at the bookshop

Palazzo Merulana houses a collection mainly composed of works of the Roman school and the Italian twentieth century, but with a momentum towards the contemporary. The exhibition path which includes more than 90 works, on a surface of 1800 square meters, is divided into four floors.

Palazzo Merulana welcomes its visitors in the “Sala delle Sculture”, where you can find a bookshop and a café. Here the visitors can enjoy a pleasant break between sculptures of many artists, among which: Antonietta Raphael, Lucio Fontana, Pericle Fazzini, Giuseppe Penone, and many others. The peaceful atmosphere is also conveyed by the lovely urban garden, far from the daily hustle and bustle of Via Merulana.

The second floor can be considered the Heart of the collection thanks to the many pictorial and sculptural works by De Chirico, Balla, Donghi, Capogrossi, Casorati, Pirandello, Severini, Cambellotti, and others. This space looks like a Hall where the visitors, sitting on the sofas, can enjoy the view of the works. The “Director of the Stars” by Jan Fabre, placed at the center of the Hall, seems to guide the visitors.

The third floor is characterized by contemporary works of art and the fourth floor is reserved for events such as conferences, cultural activities and food and wine events. This floor also hosts the “Time Machine”, a small video-photographic path narrating the history of Palazzo Merulana from its origins to the present.

The Terrace on the fifth floor offers the visitors a privileged point of view on Via Merulana.

PARCO VILLA GREGORIANA

PARCO VILLA GREGORIANA

Largo Sant’Angelo, 1 – 00019 Tivoli (Rm)

Woods, trails, ancient ruins, natural caves, a river swallowed by the rocks and a spectacular waterfall: all of this just a stone’s throw from Rome, in a park commissioned by Pope Gregory XVI in the early 19th century.
In the city of Tivoli, only half an hour from Rome, Parco Villa Gregoriana preserves a rich heritage, resonating with the sublime imagery that was so popular in the Romantic period. Nature, history, archaeology and craft merge in such an enthralling blend that in the 19th century this site became a must-see destination of the Grand Tour and the most popular subject in the paintings portraying Tivoli. In 1832, on the initiative of Pope Gregory XVI, an impressive work of hydraulic engineering was undertaken to contain the unceasing floods of river Aniene. The stream was deviated in a double tunnel dug into Mount Catillo: the water, channeled in this bottleneck, increased its level and fell in the artificial 120 meters waterfall known as Cascata Grande, which is today the second highest waterfall in Italy, behind Marmore Falls. In addition to that, the Pope created the Park that bears his name and was, for over a century, a favoured destination for artists, writers and men of culture, who disclosed its beauty to the whole world. After World War II, Parco Villa Gregoriana became the property of the State and in 2002 it was loaned to FAI. At that time, the site was in an advanced state of abandonment and hydrogeological instability. FAI’s commitment, however, brought it back to life: in 2005, Parco Villa Gregoriana reopened to visitors, who today can immerse themselves in the most luxuriant greenery, walk through the old trails finally free from brambles, smell the scents previously buried under decades of neglect and abandonment, use all the senses to discover the 74 tree species found in the park, explore interesting relics of past eras. Among these, the highlights are the remains of the Villa of the Roman Consul Manlius Vopiscus, a sumptuous residence celebrated by Horace, and the Roman temples on the acropolis, which include the renowned Temple of Vesta.
Loaned to FAI by the Italian State in 2002.

THEATER OF VILLA TORLONIA

THEATER OF VILLA TORLONIA

Via Lazzaro Spallanzani, 1

Concessionary ticket at the box office

The history of the Villa Torlonia Theatre dates back to 1841 when it was commissioned by Prince Alessandro Torlonia to the Architect Quintiliano Raimondi to celebrate his wedding with Teresa Colonna, but for various and ominous reasons the works ended only in 1874.

In addition to the scenic spaces, provided with all the technical equipment, side rooms were built to entertain guests during the prince's private parties. The project reflects the eclectic taste of the time with the coexistence of different styles: classic and majestic in the central body, Nordic in the glass and cast iron greenhouse of the southern façade, Gothic, Moorish, Greek-Roman and Renaissance in the decoration of the rooms of the side apartments. Almost all the paintings of the theater were made by Costantino Brumidi, a great artist unknown in Italy, but famous in the United States where he frescoed the Capitol of Washington, work that earned him the nickname "Michelangelo of America".

The Theatre, as well as the whole complex of Villa Torlonia, was acquired by the Municipality of Rome in 1978. The damage caused by the Anglo-American occupation (1944-1947) and by decades of theft and abandonment made the structure run.down. The restoration and functional adaptation, directed by the Design Department of Zètema Progetto Cultura, were extremely complex but were carried out with total respect of the original theatre.
